Facebook photos land Eden Prairie kids in trouble

This happened alot at my school. Kids were constantly suspended from school, or kicked out (it was a private school), because of reveling things on facebook. Of course, the student body though it was morally wrong, that the dean had no right to use facebook for these means, but people did see her surfing facebook in her office...looking for evidence. For the past two years a guest speaker come and talked to us about the danger of facebook and myspace - how practically both where destined to ruin your life. Do you think using such extreme mesaures were effective? Or even necessary?

if you're gonna party, don't take photos. if you're gonna take photos, don't put them on the internet. if you're gonna put them on the internet, don't do it on facebook or myspace or anything similar to that. if you post your party pictures on facebook, there is not help for you.
Had a friend get into serious trouble for something vaguely similar: he created a fake myspace page for a teacher. he was an apology away from having the police deal with it. the moral of this story is that you don't do things with facebook/myspace.
I know that people put some pretty dumb stuff on their facebook, myself included, but no matter how dumb it is i dont feel that its very ethical for schools to be able to take actions against kids because of what is on there. If you want to talk about it with a dystopian view, then it gives the school power that they shouldn't own. Through facebook they become "the eye in the sky" or play the role of the "big brother thats always watching." It doesnt really seem right to me.
A cousin of mine who goes to a private school just recently got kicked off student government and her cheer team of which she was class president and captain of because she was seen in the background of somebody's picture they posted on their myspace at a party where underage drinking was going on. She says she honestly didnt even drink. i thought it was pretty wrong.
