Utopia & Dystopia

I just read up on this new technology that the FBI will use in order to better identify criminals and terrorists. I would think that this new database is an example of a utopian step into the future.

My dystopian technology advancement is genetic engineering. I found an article that was published in WIRED magazine titled "Will Genetic Engineering Kill Us?" It think that this question is an important one that we should concern ourselves with, because it just might...

Utopian View - FBI database:
I think that this new technological invention will definitely benefit society and create a better or utopian life for us. The FBI wants to revamp its surveillance database. To be more specific: the new system will focus on a database that is able to easily identify criminals and terrorists via palm prints and eye scans. Of course this would mean that every person or child would have to get these tests done at birth. One might think that this type of control is pushing the envelope, but I think that in order to live happily and freely this system in necessary. In addition the mistake of falsely accusing someone of a crime would not occure as often and innocent people wouldn't be imprisoned.

Dystopia:
Genetic engineering has become a serious issue that has raised numerous eyebrows, mine included. I think that this technology would create conflict within our society and lead us to "destroy on other." Unfortunately, this type of technology is expensive and thus, only the elite class could afford to basically create the "perfect" child. I also don't think that this type of engineering should be idolized since it is entirely unnatural. People would use this technology to not keep their child from getting breast cancer, but they would use it to give their baby blond hair, blue eyes, make them taller and skinnier.

I think this new technology database is a fantastic and reliable idea. It will also be more reliable for the FBI as a dependable resource for tracking down terrorists who pose as a threat to society. There are a lot of impersonators roaming the streets, and with this technology, the FBI will be able to track down the perpetrators more efficiently. Great article!
